Would you be willing to commit NASA to a human Mars expedition?

There has been a plan on the table since the early 1990s called "Mars Direct" that provides a detailed mission architecture for landing humans on Mars within a decade or less at a total cost of roughly $30 billion. This works out to just $3 billion per year - roughly the same as we spent annually on the recently retired Space Shuttle operation in Low Earth Orbit.
