2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

  1. Can growth continue on a finite planet? When is enough enough?

Laws of thermodynamics impose inviolable limits on human activity, yet we continue to talk about growth, even when "planetary boundaries" are being exceeded (Rockstom, et al., Bardi, Wackernagel & Rees, etc.). Won't continuing growth that uses up the planet end in collapse?

    • Land Value Taxation (LVT)

When will the Georgist proposal for Land Value Taxation be taken seriously? Details follow:

17 Aspects of LVT Affecting Government, Land Owners, Community and Ethics

      Four Aspects for Government:
      1. LVT, adds to the national income as do other taxation systems, but it replaces them.
      2. The cost of collecting the LVT is less than for all the production-related taxes--tax avoidance becomes impossible.
      3. Consumers will pay less for their purchases due to lower production costs (see below). This means greater satisfaction with the way the nation manages it affairs.
      4. The national economy stabilizes--no longer experiences the 18 year…

      • What priority do you give to controling light pollution?

Light pollution is growing at a rate of 5% to 7% per year .We use 60 to 70 more light now than we did in the 1950's. There is growing evidence that Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) has harmful effects on all species. We waste up to 90% of the light generated as glare,up light over lighting and by lighting spaces all night that only get minutes of use. This light generation takes up 20% or more of all electricity generated. It costs billions .We could shut down half of our coal fired generating plants if we could eliminate lighting…

        • How can federal agencies promote health literacy among the general public

Public libraries might be a great place for the public to learn "how" to search for health information and evaluate sources. Would you support the National Library of Medicine reaching out to help local libraries teach "literacy" around health ideas?

          • What priority would you give to preventing the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria?

It is clear that widespread use of antibiotics in the raising of farm animals has contributed greatly to the evolution of disease-causing bacteria resistant to those antibiotics. Given that there are a growing number of bacterial infections for which we have no effective antibiotics, how would you work to reduce the use of antibiotics in farm animals?

            • What value do you place on poor people in other countries vs. people in the developed world?

I've suggested to people interested in preventing worse effects from climate change-- 'What if we just don't meet the demand for energy consumption?' What if we just supply energy only through non-fossil fuel combustion, right at this moment?

We're at about 1 degree Celsius above preindustrial levels at the moment. Since CO2 stays in the atmosphere for about 100 years, this means that we've basically locked in 2 degrees Celsius during that time frame, barring any technological fixes that we haven't yet figured out how to implement. Even 2 degrees Celsius will make the Middle East North Africa region uninhabitable,…

              • Do you understand that a carbon tax will hurt the wrong people?

Taxing carbon means taxing fuels. The fossil fuel companies will not pay that tax; they will pass it on to consumers. Some end users will find an incentive in that to use mass transit, replace their car or furnace with more efficient models, insulate their homes. Many, many more, the poor, working poor, and working class--the majority of the population, in this rigged economy--cannot afford these upgrades, yet are forced to drive to work, to heat their homes on a cold winter night. A carbon tax will take food off the tables of such people, suck up money they need…

                • We continue to experience the loss of wetlands in the country when we have a no net loss policy. What will you do to protect our wetlands?

Wetlands are valuable to protect our water quality, they filter our water, the protect against floods, sea level rise, and provide valuable habitat for education and recreation. We are seeing continued wetland loss when we have a national policy of no net loss in wetlands. We need to ensure that all our states are doing the max to ensure that our wetlands are healthy and providing the valuable services to our well being.

                  • Will you end taxpayer subsidies for fossils, devote that money to sustainable energy technology research?

Will you end taxpayer subsidies for the fossil fuel dinosaurs now, and devote that money to sustainable energy technology research and energy efficiency? We need to bring the fuels of the future online now, before we cook the planet putting the last dregs of fossil carbon back into the atmosphere.

Nature spent 250 million years extracting the excess carbon from the atmosphere and burying it, and cooling the planet enough that the climate is right for humans instead of giant amphibians and four-foot dragonflies, and plants we can’t eat. We’re trying to undo that in 250 years. We should have…

For example: I am an old hydrogen believer, but in recent years I have had that faith crushed by reality. The clean way to make hydrogen is by running electricity through water. But there is a minimum 20% energy penalty with electrolysis—you’d need five power plants to produce the same passenger miles as four plants will now with today’s electric cars. If we learn to bioengineer algae to turn water into hydrogen and oxygen, great. Just be sure it cannot survive in the wild, if you don’t want to risk turning the atmosphere into a fireball. Hydrogen is notoriously difficult…

                      • Will you seek justice for the fossil fuel companies lying about climate change for the last 30+ years?

Will you prosecute Rex W. Tillerson, the rest of the board of directors, and all those at Exxon-Mobil and all other fossil fuel companies who put their own greed above the very survival not only of civilization, not only of the entire human race, but of half the biosphere? And will you prosecute the “merchants of doubt” who long ago sold their souls to the tobacco companies, trying to convince people that smoking isn’t harmful and so delaying congressional action, and causing many thousands/millions more deaths?

Those same professional liars are now paid handsomely by the oil/coal/gas companies to spread…

                        • How will you permanently alter the Fossil Fuel Corporate Agenda, so it actually benefits the American People? see agenda below

                          Fossil Fuel Corporate Agenda:

Never pay a cent of Taxes on profits and bonuses until physically forced to, hide as much as possible.

Always mention the “We have such a small profit margin” idea.

Never Ever mention the subsidies government gives us.

Spin Doctor through lobbying, all Government Restrictions/Regulations to facilitate extraction of every dollar of fossil fuel possible from “Public Land” until it’s gone.

Externalize the Maximum Possible for all Environmental costs to Government/Tax payers. We really need to get closer to 100% here!

                              • Will you try to lead the world away from Portland Cement, to lower-carbon alternatives?

Portland Cement contributes about 6% of the world’s annual CO2 production. “OPC” inevitably shrinks and cracks and lets in water that rusts its rebar, which expands and breaks it apart. Structures built with it are basically designed to fail in 40 to 100 years.

The Roman aqueducts are still standing after 2000 years because they used a better cement, and one that puts a lot less carbon into the atmosphere. There are cements (Geo Blue II) that claim to be three or four times stronger, produce 1/10 the carbon, 1/10 the production-plant cost, less expensive to make—and they claim that…

                                • Would you consider assembling a scientific National Board of Experts whose sole role is to educate the public on scientific issues?

This non-political group would provide unbiased descriptions and explanations of scientific and technical issues through lectures, town halls and interviews using layman's terms. Their role would be as educators to the general public on complicated and controversial scientific topics, insuring that the public is broadly informed.

                                    • Fake science? How can we tell?

What plans do you have for safeguarding the American public from bogus "scientific" reports that are paid for by large corporations and designed to look like they are unbiased and legitimate scientific research or government publications?

                                      • Species Conservation

What is the Politically Correct number of species you will allow Asia especially China, to eat into extinction and collect into extinction before you actually attempt to stop them?

The point being how little straight facts effect political policy when it’s not P.C. to talk about.

                                        • Thomas Jefferson wrote: "The Christian God is a being of terrific character: cruel, vindictive, capricious and unjust".

Do you agree with president Jefferson and what would you do to minimize the powers that religious fanatics in government?
