2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

  1. How will you create a culture of scientific integrity within government?

In 2009, President Obama pledged to create strong scientific integrity standards within government agencies that are charged with protecting our health, safety, and environment. While some progress has been made, there is a lot more that should be done to ensure that science fully informs policy making and scientists have the ability to speak freely about their research. As president, how will you continue to make progress and improve scientific integrity at the federal level?

    • Will you bring back the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)?

The United State has become a plutocracy, sealed by Citizens United. Instead of governing for corporations and the wealthy, why not govern based upon clean data and sound science? Bring back the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Require that for each law that is passed in contradiction to the scientific consensus as determined by the OTA, Congress must explain why the science is being ignored. Such a commitment really covers the entire list of the leading science topics to debate (energy, environment, evolution, climate change, etc). Will you bring back the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)?

      • How would you ensure that government policy is based on evidence and science rather than ideology or personal opinion?

In order to avoid the potential biases inherent in making judgements from all forms of personal beliefs and opinions, how would you strive to ensure that policy in all areas of government is based on evidence and science rather than being potentially biased when based on personal beliefs, ideologies etc?

        • Are you willing to place the safety of our citizens over the profits of companies?

My boss at the EPA (Region IX) told me in 1977, "If the EPA did what it was supposed to do, it would be shut down immediately." The power elite maintains too much control of our society. Integration of sociological, economical, technological, and environmental perspectives into policy making is required, rather than the present process that tends to ignore sociological, technical, and environmental perspectives. What will you to to make sure the EPA actually takes on these battles?

          • How will you incorporate real science in your administration?

How will you incorporate real Science in your administration, and what steps should we take to educate elected officials vis a vis science and its role in public policy?

            • What will you do to reverse trends to restrict the National Science Foundation from funding research that is politically contentious?

The National Science Foundation has recently been restricted from funding research in certain social science domains and areas of geosciences. There is reason to believe that these restrictions have been put in place to limit the availability of scientific results that speak to contentious political issues. What would your administration do to ensure that the public funding of science is not focused on maintaining ignorance in politically inconvenient domains?

              • Please identify your current scientific advisor(s) and their credentials.

If you do not currently have scientific advisor(s) in your campaign staff, please cite the names of one or more examples of the kinds of people you _would_ have in your cabinet. (No commitments implied, just examples.) If you do not intend to have scientific advisors as part of your administration, please explain why.

                • Exxon scientists knew about their contribution to climate change but concealed their findings. How will you prevent this in the future?

The non-profit, non-partisan news outlet, www.insideclimatenews.org reported that Exxon's research confirmed Fossil Fuel's role in global warming but the company nevertheless led efforts to block solutions. Research also revealed that nearly every major US and multinational oil and gas company knew including Mobil, Amoco, Phillips, Texaco, Shell, Sunoco, Sohio, and Standard Oil of California and Gulf Oil (predecessors to Chevron).

If elected, what will you do to bring these companies to proper justice and to prevent this from ever happening again?

                  • Are you prepared to stand strong against unfounded popular opinion?

In a time where mass criticism is more quickly conveyed via social networks, it will be challenging to stand strong against unfounded yet popular opinions. Are you prepared to do that? Are you prepared to, say, stand strong against the "vaccines cause problems" sentiment?

                    • Why do you feel that your background in science makes you qualified to be the next president of the United States?

A president should be, or have advisors who are, well versed in the most pressing scientific issues of the day. We have seen in the Bush and Reagan administrations specifically, a disregard of science fact and peer reviewed facts in favor of personal opinions influenced by special interest groups. If you are unwilling to accept science fact backed up by repeatable research, why should you be president of the United States?

This covers several areas, from energy to climate change to accuracy in texts to who they are getting money from.

                        • How will you make sure science policy benefits all Americans, not just the wealthy?

Science policy is more and more being guided to benefit the wealthiest donors to candidates' campaigns and less and less to benefit the general welfare of all Americans. Climate science and scientists are attacked and ridiculed by members of government science committees and as a result, threats to the nation's coastlines, agriculture, general infrastructure, and defense are currently being ignored by representatives who do not want to offend the ideological or financial sensitivities of their largest donors. How do you plan to make sure that science and technology policy is based on sound science applied to benefit the general welfare…

                          • What role will you give to scientific facts in your administration?

Big interest groups and lobbies have infiltrated politics and given rise to science deniers and the deliberate propagation of misinformation. How will you ensure accredited expert scientists and government agencies have the funds for research, the right to publish freely and will be considered in a decision making processes by the legislators?

                            • Will you overhaul our broken regulatory toxicology system that has allowed 90,000+ toxic chemicals to poison our bodies and our planet?

Our regulatory toxicology system is broken. It was established in the 1930s and laws have barely changed. Because of these laws and the testing methods used, we have allowed countless toxic chemicals to poison our bodies and the environment. Will you support replacing archaic, scientifically flawed, expensive and cruel animal-based toxicology tests with modern, scientifically reliable and cost-effective methods like in-vitro tests with human cells?

                              • Do you agree that members of Congress politicize science in ways detrimental to the nation?

Many scientists are finding their research increasingly scrutinized and micromanaged by ideologically compelled, scientifically illiterate politicians desirous of achieving political advantage and donor support. Why are these scientists correct or incorrect? Are policy changes needed? How so?

                                    • What is your basis for determining science policy?

You are not a doctor, but are willing to be treated subject to the judgment of the medical community. You are also not a scientist; are you willing as president to let the scientific community guide your policies on climate change, pollution, and scientific research in general?

                                      • Shouldn't we establish a U.S. Department of Science?

Bring all science agencies in government under one department.

                                        • How would you insure that public policy obtains clear apolitical information from scientists?

Federal dollars have significant effects on the ability of scientists to work in their filelds of expertise. Scientific truths are not uncovered by voting processes but by rigorous application of the scientific method. How would you and how would you direct your policy-making staff to minimize the political spin often imbedded in scientific advice produced by scientists who have a political agenda?
