2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

    • When will Scientists and Engineers be part of the discussion on the future of the US?

This includes the environment, clean water, healthy farming practices (no pesticide resistant GMO's), our crumbling infrastructure, etc

      • With the need to put more people to work, would you consider public works programs that focused on infrastructure?

The Public Works Administration established in 1933 put thousands of individuals to work in its eight years and funded an amazing amount of backbone American infrastructure, from bridging the Florida Keys to building airports, dams, new schools and military installations. Our country is now facing drastic need of innovation and construction to address clean water, re-styling and replacing outdated, unsafe water works and sewage systems among other things. In line is the need for sustainable, affordable energy for example. Projects begging for brain and brawn. We have unemployed as well as under employed people who need better jobs bringing pride…

        • How will you tackle America's crumbling water distribution system?

Situations like Flint, MI have brought attention to the country's failing water distribution systems and failure to provide safe, clean water for everyone. What steps will you take to prevent situations like Flint from occurring on the regular?

            • Who should pay for the dismantling of fossil fuel infrastructure?

The time has come when we must begin thinking and planning for the dismantling of much of the fossil fuel infrastructure which will become obsolete and unnecessary. Who should be responsible for the planning, the oversight and the cost of dismantling and environmental clean up?

              • How would you handle gender equality and accountability in the academic workplace?

The ratio of women to men who are developing scientific careers decreases as individuals progress to higher professional levels. We hear more often these days about how institutions frequently cover up cases where women are disrespected or disqualified from employment simply because she may have taken some time off to raise a child. If we aim to increase science education to all students in grade school, how would you protect gender equality on professional levels in their career?

                • Will you try to lead the world away from Portland Cement, to lower-carbon alternatives?

Portland Cement contributes about 6% of the world’s annual CO2 production. “OPC” inevitably shrinks and cracks and lets in water that rusts its rebar, which expands and breaks it apart. Structures built with it are basically designed to fail in 40 to 100 years.

The Roman aqueducts are still standing after 2000 years because they used a better cement, and one that puts a lot less carbon into the atmosphere. There are cements (Geo Blue II) that claim to be three or four times stronger, produce 1/10 the carbon, 1/10 the production-plant cost, less expensive to make—and they claim that…

                  • How will you improve science as career?

To retain the status as the world's most powerful nation, the US needs the strongest scientific community. To maintain such a community requires that science, as a career, becomes a financially rewarding profession with a career path that offers competitive pay for mid-level scientists so as to recruit and retain the best national and international talent. How will you work to improve science as a career?
