2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

  1. How will you give the FDA their power back to not approve a drug of device.

The reviewers in their division used to be make the decision, now they are over ridden by higher up management in the FDA. Do you wonder why so many drugs with horrible side effects have been allowed on the market. In the past this would not have happen.

    • Will you work to end prohibition against cannabis use?

Given the lack of evidence that cannabis use is a threat to society (with or without comparing its use to, for example, tobacco and alcohol), do you support ending the prohibition against cannabis use, sale, and/or private cultivation?

      • How would you deal with spiking prescription drug costs?

According to AHIP, spending on prescription medication jumped 13% in 2014 alone and, with many medications costing over $750,000 a year, there seems to be no relief in sight. What do you think are the best approaches to reining in these costs?

        • Will you approve the "morning after" pill for on the shelf sales in drug stores?

FDA panels staffed by outside scientists have recommended the "morning after" pill for on the shelf sales in both the Bush and Obama administrations, yet both administrations overrode the advice of their science panels and restricted the pill's availability. Will you approve the "morning after" pill for on the shelf sales in drug stores?

          • Will federal gov't resume the pursuit and prosecution of people who sell, possess or consume marijuana?

As you know, several states have or are considering state laws for the creation, distribution, possession and use of marijuana and related products. And a majority of states outline permitted medical uses for marijuana.

Aside from the larger question of whether marijuana should no longer be a Schedule I drug at the federal level: How will all of this change on January 20th 2017?

            • How would you enforce R&D/pricing transparency among pharma companies?

Do you believe that passing a policy requiring pharmaceutical companies to commit to transparency and submit annual reports to the federal government with information about how they price specific drugs, including the cost spent on research and development as well as advertising, would be an effective way at reducing the cost of prescription drugs for all Americans?

              • How would you address the growing opioid addiction in the United States? Would you hold the pharmaceutical companies accountable?

We are 5% of the world's population, but we consume 80% of the world's opioids. Opioids are the most addictive class of drug, but are being prescribed for chronic pain, which wasn't their original intended purpose.

                • How will H.R.6 affect prescription drug prices?

H.R.6, which passed the House, is currently in the Senate, and is aimed at "accelerating the discovery, development, and delivery of 21st century cures," H.R.6 lacks effective provisions to decrease drug cost. In fact, Molchan, Rickert, and Powers (The 21st Century Cures Act: More Homework To Do. Health Affairs Blog, 2015) point out that it may inadvertently increase drug cost and stifle innovative drug discovery through exclusivity protection and use of surrogate endpoints rather than hard clinical data from patients. Considering the shortcomings of H.R.6 along with an August 2015 poll from The Kaiser Family Foundation that found that nearly…

                    • What will you do to stop the releasing of drugs that are unsafe?

I would like to see a third party oversight laboratory. At this time most if not all drug companies "regulate" themselves. This leaves a big loophole where the drug company can "fudge" the results. This has occurred more often than the public is aware.

                      • What priority would you give to preventing the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria?

It is clear that widespread use of antibiotics in the raising of farm animals has contributed greatly to the evolution of disease-causing bacteria resistant to those antibiotics. Given that there are a growing number of bacterial infections for which we have no effective antibiotics, how would you work to reduce the use of antibiotics in farm animals?

                        • Is it drug use or drug abuse that is the real problem?

The purpose of drugs is to relieve pain whether physical or mental, dosage is critical, too little does not help too much can be lethal.

How does making a drug illegal allow patients to get a standard, safe drug?
