2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

  1. What role would nuclear power play in your efforts and energy policies to curb greenhouse gases?

Nuclear power has been safely used for over 50 years. Our navy travels around the globe powered by nuclear energy. It is, on a W generated basis, the safest form of energy we used. Newer generation reactors are safer. Small nuclear reactors could be placed locally, and we could avoid billions of dollars on grid upgrades and transmission lines. What role would nuclear power play in your efforts and energy policies to curb greenhouse gases?

      • What will it cost to store the nations current and anticipated levels of used nuclear fuel given the half-life of typical fuel components?

A president should understand the concept of half-life and what the half life is for spent nuclear fuels. He should know what options are available for safely storing such fuels, and given an annual cost to do so properly, should be able to estimate the future cost to the nation of storing spent fuels

        • What are your plans for storing radioactive waste? Would you reopen Yucca mountain storage faciilty? Or leave the waste where it is?

The British nuclear agency has determined that if they drilled 5 mile hole and threw all the world's nuclear waste down that hole, that tectonic movements would cause it to be buried in the subduction zone where it could never come back up to the surface.

          • How do you plan to protect citizens from the never ending irradiation of Pacific Ocean?

Oxygenation of every cell by supplementation by everyone, everywhere with Co-enzyme Q10, everyday, forever, in either Ubiquinone or Ubiquinol form. https://secure.avaaz.org/en/20mm_story_page/?story_id=163
My Avaaz story was published in Align Life article on how statins destroy CoQ10 http://alignlife.com/articles/cardiovascular/coq10-can-reduce-side-effects-from-statins
Fukushima irradiation cannot be eliminated. We can only oxygenate every cell to 100%. Free radical cancer cells cannot attack a 100% oxygenated cell. Free radical cancer cells attack oxidized cells

            • Since we cannot predict where the next breakthrough discovery will occur, should we spend more on Nuclear or Renewable R&D?

Will you support a level R&D spending program that will insure the USA does not squander ever more funds on just Nuclear R&D but will also focus on renewables?

              • Will you support putting more funding into nuclear research?

We've never had a catastrophic melt down (we've averted them using proper safety guidelines, unlike other countries), yet our nuclear programs seemed to have all but vanished. With the current climate issues of dumping tons of CO2 in our air from fossil fuels, shouldn't we be funding technology that isolates our energy needs from the world?

                • Do you agree that we are babies playing with matches when it comes to nuclear power?

Nuclear power is presented to the public as safe despite very serious accidents and many mishaps. Why continue funding nuclear power plants when we can develop safe, renewable sources of power?

                  • Given the fact that the planet is heating up, What percentage of a renewable budget would you direct towards nuclear power?

To answer whether the candidate has looked at renewables, and then made a budget to finance it and finally has a percent of which goes to nuclear power. This question/answer by the candidate may answer many other like minded questions.

                    • What steps would you take to ensure we prevent a Fukushima-like nuclear meltdown disaster in the US?

What will you do to prevent a Fukushima-esque nuclear meltdown disaster from happening here the next time a super storm knocks out the power grid? Considering how risky nuclear energy is, would you support increased focus on wind and solar energy over nuclear energy?

                      • How would you reduce regulatory hurdles and encourage investment in new nuclear energy technologies?

We know that without global adoption, carbon-free energy production will not grow fast enough to reverse increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide. One of the only sources of carbon-free energy with the potential to be reliable and cheap enough to replace fossil fuels worldwide is nuclear energy, especially new technologies in development such as Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors. Currently, private US investments in next generation nuclear is going overseas due to the US regulatory environment that makes it nearly impossible to develop domestically. As one of our best hopes for addressing climate change, experts say we cannot continue to ignore this…

                        • What is your position on Safe and Renewable Nuclear Energy to replace current technology, the Liquid Salt Thorium Reactor?

What is your position on Safe and Renewable Nuclear Energy to replace current technology, the Liquid Salt Thorium Reactor?
The Thorium fuel cycle is used to produce NON-Proliferation nuclear fuel and little waste product. And the China Syndrome we see in liquid water (current tech) does NOT exist. Thorium is plentiful, therefore fuel costs should be very low. NO more high reprocessing and/or storage cost. No more 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl or Fukushima potential disasters. This is a no brainer. I know the GE's and Westinghouse's don't want to loose the high cost construction and reprocessing/fuel business BUT this is…
