2016 Presidential Science, Tech, Health, and Environmental Forum

What are the top science, tech, health, and environmental questions the candidates for president should answer?

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) Be sure to vote on existing questions.
B) Address your question to the candidates and ask about their policy positions. Don’t ask rhetorical questions. Ask your question in summary form (your “headline” question), then a new window will open up, where you should:
C) Provide more detail in a 2-part format:
1) Declarative statement (1-2 sentences max) describing the situation and context, followed by
2) Question (1 sentence) asking what they will do about it if elected.

FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE FROM 2012:
What priority will you give to funding scientific research?
Federally funded research has helped to produce America’s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research. Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

A top science question the candidates for president should answer is:

To many of us, our religious beliefs and our science classes seem to come into conflict. Which of these would have the most influence on your important decisions?

    • On what basis should elected officials deny scientific evidence?

Some people reject well accepted scientific evidence. For example, on evolution, on the age of the earth and of the universe, on the changing climate and its causes. How would you as an elected official judge scientific evidence and the conclusions that result?

      • If elected, will you follow popular opinion or scientific consensus?

We live in an environment where the loudest voices and jingoistic slogans dominate the media landscape. As President, if public opinion contradicts scientific consensus, which will you follow?

Or do you deny the value of science in improving our lives and our common environment?

            • How will you approach future controversies about a scientific issue?

If you encounter a new very important and urgent scientific issue about which there is major controversy among the public, how would you go about deciding what to do?
How would you approach an issue for which an indisputable expert consensus is in direct opposition to the desires of the major contributors to you and your party?

              • Can you discuss two scientific / science issues that concern you? And, in particular, how would you address these as President?

Such an open-ended, though directed, question will enable the candidate to provide a window on their general thinking related to science issues and their ability to translate that thinking/those issues into pragmatic governance.

                • What would be your reaction if your science advisors told you about something urgent, but that contradicted your own preconceived notions?

Any scientist knows that he or she may have to revise or even throw away some previously held idea, in the face of new data. If you encountered new information from science that contradicted your beliefs or political values, how would you choose?

                  • Would you consider assembling a scientific National Board of Experts whose sole role is to educate the public on scientific issues?

This non-political group would provide unbiased descriptions and explanations of scientific and technical issues through lectures, town halls and interviews using layman's terms. Their role would be as educators to the general public on complicated and controversial scientific topics, insuring that the public is broadly informed.

                    • Who are the largest contributors to your campaign fund?

Companies that donate large amounts of money into a politician's campaign fund most likely expect something in return. Thus, awareness of the influences and what each might be "pushing" is necessary to get an honest idea of what each politician will be promoting and where he or she stands on vital issues. So, who are the largest contributors to your campaign fund?

                        • How has scientific consensus on actions needed to address important public issues influenced your policy making?

Candidates are seldom challenged to describe how they go about understanding the root causes of unique problems they encouter, how they go about identifying the most effective solutions, and how they then ensure their actions are having the desired effect.

                            • How would you work to restructure institutions, including Congress, to foster integrated treatment of integrated issues?

Our institutions seem ill-equipped in addressing issues that cut across scientific and organizational boundaries, yet that defines today's most significant issues. How would you restructure the national conversation and governmental organization to foster integrated treatment of such issues?
